Some annotations to my earlier piece.

Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Japan and South Korea — I read this somewhere, I swear. Maybe several somewheres.

futagals — what they have is more an enlarged clitoris (à la Time Stripper Mako or La Blue Girl) than an actual penis. (Okay, I admit it, I'm an otaku who doesn't know nearly as much about Japan, or what's biologically possible, as he thinks he does.)

Roshutsu-shitabi — literally something like "exposure-doing day". May be combined with hanami; I haven't decided yet. (A symptom of my notional future Japan shaking off the tight-assery of the Tokugawa and McArthur eras.)

eye-widening, polychromal hair-dyes and, yes, neo-halfs — another example of my gaijin-itude showing. The idea of looking like an anime character as a fashion statement was one I didn't care to resist. So sue me.

Izumo Kabuki — named for the inventor of Kabuki. Think Takarazuka, but more likely to perform Utena than VerBara.)

Don't worry about it. It was a charmingly odd little view of the future, and I'm happy to have seen it.

The idea of looking like an anime character as a fashion statement was one I didn't care to resist. So sue me.

Hey, I invented an entire subculture in Japanese society circa 2001-2008 solely to explain Misato's hair color in Neon Epoch Evangelion. (It never worked its way into the writing, unfortunately, but there was hardly a chance for the characters to go on a tour of Japanese cultural history.) And I created Nina's entire backstory in on20 as justification for wanting a catgirl in the cast makeup.

So you're in... company. Don't know if I count as good company or not, but that's for the courts to decide.

*bows* Thanks. You may get to see more of it; the event may be done, but as I said in the comments to spiralpegasus' piece, I'm not done with that world. (And, as I didn't say, I didn't create it just for the event. All I did was take it down off my Idea Shelf, blow some of the dust off it, and put it out there for the world to see.)

The creators of one Sailor Moon fanfic sequel created a fad for viral hair-dye so some of the leads could inherit funky hair colors as a side-effect. So we're both in good company. And I'm glad to be in your company — such gladness being, I'd say, part of any definition of "good company" that's worth the candle..

Looking something up for the Trinity Storytellers Handbook in the online incarnation of brucebaugh's Asia Ascendant, I found this passage in the chapter on Asia as a region, specifically on Nippon:

Many rebellious young people of pure Nihonjin descent frequently express their disapproval of the current system and their solidarity with the native-born gaijin by dying their skin, hair and eyes "foreign" colors. Within the past decade, this fad has spread outward to include completely unnatural colors like green or fuscia. Much to the dismay of the older generation, teens with blue or pink hair, silver eyes and many equally odd combinations are growing increasingly common, especially among the nation's large middle class.

I think the spinoff I mentioned earlier (Peter Ward's characters, later seen as the FFML's Magical Girl Fanfic Theatre review crew) was my primary influence, but it's quite likely Baugh and maliszewski's work was in there too. Or else that they drew from the same well. *shrug*
