This would've gone up in the morning, but we went on a day trip to a mall nearby, leaving in the morning so we could be back in time for the Preakness Stakes. It was still, in fact, being edited right up to the moment I posted it (mostly filling in the links I'd prepared spaces for, sure, but even so).

2001
[Aberrant] In the wake of the London Peace Accord, Utopia enjoys even greater approval than before (a thing most would have sworn was mathematically impossible).

They lost ground in South America, though, after T2M relocated to Mexico City, taking much of Utopia's operations with it. But, as Duke Rollo will write a few years from now,

If it wasn't fucking Utopia's fault, some other heinous conglomerate, whether corporate, religious, moral or paragovernmental, would have crawled up Mexico City's ass and befouled it with its own brand of postconsumerist holocaust.

(Yes, I'm off on a tangent. If this surprises you, you haven't been reading this thing long enough. Or you didn't come here from the old place. Or you haven't met me. Or all of the above, of course. Besides, I won't really have anything to add about the London Accords for months yet.)

The KulturesZeit article from which I'm lifting all these quotes will have been reprinted in the TU in Rollo's 2008 Lucent Press book Sickness: Vomit and Elections in 2008, and was (p)reprinted in OTL in Justin Achilli's 2000 minibook Aberrant: Fear and Loathing. It documents the two previous attempts by US-based entities to colonize Mexico at the turn of the millennium. The first of these was by corporate media outlets like HearNow! Music and Starbucks, and didn't go so well:

Surely ViaSoft had intended to spark a wave of Madison Avenue consumer frenzy but had overlooked the fact that the local economies of starving, violent nations aren't built around pallets of For God's Sake, Sting Still Refuses to Stop Singing box sets and Grande Latte Sirhan Sirhan Kenya-Scented Agave-Twist slop-buckets of coffee priced at eight bucks a pop, which roughly equates to three million units of the local currency.

Then the US government put your (or somebody's) tax dollars to work hiring novas to expedite Mexico's corporatization. The local mascaras, so called for wearing garish wrestling masks, kicked mucho culo estadounidense, and "[s]urprisingly, heart won out over pig-fucking greed, as it has so rarely in history." Mexican schools would afterward call this "100-hour epic struggle" La Cruzada Tierra, while US schools name it

the Mexico Incident, whereby a group of rogue communist jackboot radicals enabled an entire nation to refuse the sacrament of development. Yr. Corresp. recalls it as the clash of the savages with the chancred idiot-god over the rights to pay-per-view cockfights and chalupa-turf franchise.

But then came Team Tomorrow, and against the "Village People of Righteousness" (as they're called in at least one other supplement), Mexico had no chance. In fact, Mexico welcomed PU as protectors against "the gonorrheal grubdollars from the north". Utopia said it wasn't imperialistic on their part, and most people trusted them the same way most Americans trust anyone who says he's acting in "God's" name as long as he doesn't do violence in that name (and sometimes even then).

Rollo quotes Utopia as claiming "that their multinational backing made them a support mechanism instead of a junta". This is true, in the same sense that Bill Clinton was speaking the truth when he said he "did not have sexual relations" with Monica. In that case, the definition of "sexual relations" that excluded oral sex had been done by Paula Jones' legal team, and I cannot believe it was done for any other purpose than to set a perjury trap. In this case, Utopia's legal team used dictionary definitions to avoid a perjury trap.

"Within two years...Mexico City had been broken and tamed like the snorting bucking monster it once was." (Rollo quotes an ad campaign which may still be running in the relative Now: "Come to Mexico City, the Eden reborn on Earth".)

Beneath this blanket of niceness and invigoration, of course, the old corruption still flourished. You're just not supposed to pay attention to the man behind the curtain....

And who cared? The half-assed success of the project never made the news because it affected only poor Mexicans, and the Utopians knew you didn't want to see that.
