Dharmasena talks about being obliged to go "very, very deep in[to] Sector 3" to report to Balmer, about having to wander around and literally sweat for a whole hour before before sitting down to rest, at which point Antaeus came "heaving... out of the ground, geocarapace and all." (Dharmasena wonders if Spencer Balmer's body has replaced human flesh with soil and vegetation, or if he even has a permanent body.)
Dharmasena briefed Antaeus on "the month's plan of attack", to which the nova listened in silence. The silence continued for several minutes,
He wonders (in the words I used as cut-text) how Dr. Spencer Balmer, Antaeus, nova and scientist, can be such an amazing ecologist, yet so numbingly bad at interacting with baselines. "He makes me redefine my idea of the word 'nova,' that's for sure." For all he's learned since he joined Utopia, he's still baffled by it all sometimes.

until that strange, deep, rich voice came welling out of his... well, vicinity.
Turns out that there's some sort of privately owned plant starting up in Madagascar, and Antaeus has just made it our next concern. I double-checked the OpNet for as much info as I could scrounge, and I couldn't find a thing about it. But sure enough, there was a dossier waiting on my desk by 5:00.
How the hell Antaeus gets this information is beyond me; we get visits from other directors maybe once every three months, and they don't usually visit the gardens.
