Another day, another datum. It doesn't really advance the metaplot, but it relates to something that advanced it a lot.

2004
On talk radio's Jordan McDevitt Show, Brent from Dallas has great difficulty believing that T2M is so stymied they can't even find suspects in the São Paulo bombing.

Brent suggests a cover-up by Utopia, making this show probably the point at which that meme first entered the mainstream. Or maybe just the point when it achieved acceptability — after all, there's a not-too-well-hidden anti-Utopia streak in the TU's America. (This may, of course, just be down to the American people's suspicion of anyone who claims good intentions while doing things that threaten our Top Nation status.)

Many South Americans had been suspicious of Utopia as well, seeing the "colonization" of Mexico (by T2M Americas and Utopia's new North American HQ) as the beginning of a new wave of conquistadors. The prompt response of T2MAm to the São Paulo bombing turned that right around.

That, and the other gains Utopia will make from the bombing, may suffice as explanations for Proteus' doing it (assuming it was a Proteus op, of course, but I don't know of very many Aberrant fans who don't make that assumption). Still, you'd be surprised how many chins William of Ockham can't shave.

It certainly might have been Proteus...I remember considering if it was an attempt to ram the science and technology strictures through via fear when I first read about it.

Still, part of me wants to think it was Divis for some reason.

It's possible, though my sense of Michael is that he's not personally prone to violence. Then again, the Teragen already existed by last fall, and its beacon had quite likely expressed his "'Do what thou wilt' shall be the law of the One Race" attitude. So it's entirely possible that some Terat took independent action and that the "fusion explosive" story was put about to cover that up.

Ah, I'm sure Michael would like to portray himself as being above violent action, since he's so evolved and everything, but his own actions both in the past, in the Aberrant metaplot, and the future deny that. He's more than capable of violence...he just prefers not to have to soil his own hands if he can get someone else to do it for him first.
