aberrantangels: (Nova Age)

"There's only one source for [adrenochrome.] The adrenaline [sic] glands from a living human body," I said. "It's no good if you get it out of a corpse."
— "Raoul Duke" (Dr. Hunter S. Thompson), Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: a savage journey to the heart of the American Dream

2006
[Aberrant] DEA agent Kyle Landers submits a memo to Michael Padgett, the DEA's Northeast regional director, confirming that the Tri-Cities drug ring has been broken, but that nothing conclusive was found to connect it to the Camparelli-Zukhov megasyndicate. He also notifies Padgett of the existence of soma, which the Tri-Cities ring were peddling.

The "soma" of the Nova Age is a lethally-obtained extract from a living nova's Mazarin-Rashoud node. Landers describes it as "some kind of super-adrenochrome.... Imagine crack, but about 10,000 times more potent." It kills most baseline users outright, but those who survive experience the ultimate high: a taste of godhood.

"Even worse, it's rumored that soma is the only thing that can give a nova a sustained high. Their metabolism makes everything else seem like aspirin." Mixed with cocaine, it lowers the defenses of the nova brain to let the Bolivian soldiers march in.

Some novas even deal in the drug, raising a certain Doctor of Journalism's question "What kind of monster client have you picked up this time?" Aberrant: Teragen names Angela de la Cruz among them, which I can't imagine sitting well with some of Narcosis' fellow Terats (particularly Geryon, who refuses to kill a fellow nova, though that won't stop him brutally maiming one).
