On this day in 1999, Project Utopia's first Satellite Laboratory opens in midtown Manhattan, not far from the site of the first eruption (Randel "The Fireman" Portman). It was and is under the supervision of Dr. Farah Rashoud (co-discoverer of the node that gives novas their powers), so it, and the dozens of satellite labs to follow over the next decade, came to be known as Rashoud facilities. The official primary purpose of the facilities was to provide the newly erupted a safe place to learn their new powers and control over same. In the opening day press conference, Cæstus Pax said the labs would double as recruiting stations for Utopia in general and Team Tomorrow in particular.

A few black-helicopter watchers worried about this (Aberrant: Project Utopia reprints a letter that ran January 12 in the New York Times: "Can't you see it? They're building an army."), but they were about the only ones. After all, we were talking about novas here. All the world loved novas and always would, right? (Pardon the bitter, ironic chuckle. If you're familiar with the Trinity Universe, you know where it came from.)

The other irony is that the letter writer's real objection is summed up in the last sentence of his letter: "If anyone should be recruiting American novas, it should be the American government." In other words, he's one of those people who are only worried about the New World Order inasmuchas there's a risk of the United States not being in charge of it. Anything that lets us keep our status as Top Nation (© Sellars and Yeatman) is a Good Thing™. In other words, his counterpart in OTL (alternate history fandom speak for "our time-line") probably applauds the goals of the Project for the New American Century, or would if the so-called liberal media were giving PNAC more than the cursory attention that lets them claim not to be ignoring a story.

Email's fine, thanks. ianwatsonATwolf-spoorDOTorg

If you give me the books you got your dates from, I could go through the books you don't have. I've got a complete collection, you see. It's not that I can't go through my books again, it's just that I don't want to when there are other things to do.

When I go through the remainder of the books for dates, I can send those on to you, and then we'll both have a full collection. (:
