Well, the next update would be the election, and that's tomorrow, so I guess I'd better get off these things I've been sitting on.
That's a vague relief, even if it's not clear he'd expected them to act on that love, and even though he considers power the defining attribute of a Godness.
The previous week, Dr. Kasheyev had returned to the DAIKOKU facility from the inertial containment lab, after "some sort of quarrel" whose nature was a mystery to Soguk. Without Kasheyev's ability to sense subatomic structures, and his ability to solve the relevant equations even more precisely than DAIKOKU's computers, the research had stalled.
On the 8th, Dr. Nakazawa decided to show Kasheyev a test-run of a "plasma configuration we'd had some luck with." Kasheyev didn't think this was wise necessarily, and it turned out he was right: "the plasma tied itself in knots and burned a hole in the containment tube!" The plasma jet wouldn't have hurt Soguk (200,000,000° sounds like a lot, "but the plasma is so thin and dissipates so quickly that it doesn't have time to burn"), but Kasheyev threw himself in its path anyway, and "his whole body glowed" when it struck him.
Neither of them was hurt, but they went to see the doctor anyway. The doctor recommended Soguk take the day off, and he was so light-headed he agreed. The next day, the DAIKOKU staff discussed the accident only in terms of preventing a repeat. Only time will tell what effects the whole thing had.

[Aberrant] Mark Anthony Green writes in his journal: "It seems cruel that the Lord told us of Heaven. [Earth] is a satisfying world in many ways...but God dangles Heaven above us like a man teasing his dog." He opines that to attain great power — to erupt as a nova, for instance, or to be elected President — is to become like God, and vows that "If I become like God, I will not tease the people with stories of Heaven. I will teach them to love the world they have."
That's a vague relief, even if it's not clear he'd expected them to act on that love, and even though he considers power the defining attribute of a Godness.

[Aberrant] Soguk Birlesme, a baseline post-doctoral assisting Dr. Dmitri Kasheyev in his fusion research, writes home to his parents in Thailand about a recent accident at work in whose resolution he got to see Dr. Kasheyev's powers in action.

Canon questions
Date: 2008-11-03 10:32 pm (UTC)I've been working on my post for the Conversations with Dead People plot in Milliways (involving Annabelle talking with Whitley Styles in his 2008). I realized that my usual method of making stuff up as I go might not work so well in the Aberrant era, where there is more canonical information for me to conflict with.
I was wondering if you would mind telling me what, if anything, TU canon says about certain things. I've looked at the Wiki here, but it has a lot of 'unknowns' and empty entries in it.

Date: 2008-11-04 07:20 pm (UTC)Are Dixon and Tallon both deceased by 2008? Stefokowski is alive and working freelance according to the Wiki, the others are just listed as unknown. (I have no idea how Stefokowski's supposed to be taking down Novas. I would think an Inspiration era Daredevil would get pounded flat no matter how many XP they had.)
Did AEon's surviving founders get access to something that slowed down their aging? They're not nearly as decrepit as they should be going by calender date.
Is it stated whether Whitley knows about Michael's manipulation of the Galatea incident to produce eximorphs? It would seem like a logical conclusion to jump to, if you knew what Whitley did.
Is AEon's main office still in Chicago?
I know that Max shows up again in the Aberrant era in 2008, but I couldn't find when in 2008 he made his reappearance.
I am curious about your educated guess about what Whitley was doing in 2008.
I know this isn't covered in canon, as it deals with the events surrounding Annabelle's death. In your opinion, would AEon have tried to recover her body, or is she still under Rome somewhere?
Sorry to bombard you with so many questions, but once I started thinking about the plot they started piling up.

Date: 2008-11-04 09:06 pm (UTC)I've been assuming so.
I have no idea how Stefokowski's supposed to be taking down Novas.
Amazing luck, and probably some gadgets.
Did AEon's surviving founders get access to something that slowed down their aging?
Either that, or Inspiration naturally prolongs lifespan.
Is it stated whether Whitley knows about Michael's manipulation of the Galatea incident to produce eximorphs?
Not that I recall, but I assume (as you do) that he does.
Is AEon's main office still in Chicago?
I assume so. It's certainly there in the Trinity timeframe.
I know that Max shows up again in the Aberrant era in 2008, but I couldn't find when in 2008 he made his reappearance.
Sometime in late June or early July at the latest, judging by this Proteus communiqué (one of two new items added to the section on Project Proteus in Aberrant d20).
I am curious about your educated guess about what Whitley was doing in 2008.
I suspect he was still working with Æon*, as Max's inside source of information and as a voice for the way Æon used to be.
In your opinion, would AEon have tried to recover her body, or is she still under Rome somewhere?
I think they would have tried, but that's not a guarantee that they'd have succeeded.
* BTW, in case I haven't already said, I get the Æ in Æon by typing Æ. Now you can do it too! (-8
Re: Canon questions
Date: 2008-11-04 10:44 pm (UTC)The image of a very surprised Nova getting beaten by a 'baseline' Stefokowski is rather amusing. (I'm assuming Daredevil's don't show up as anything other than a normal human to Nova senses, since they don't even 'ping' with the Telluric Resonance knack.)
I can definitely see Whitley serving as a source of inside information and a voice of reason. I would imagine that he's had a lot of practice at appearing harmless, and since he was in charge of the files from the beginning...He could have made himself indispensable as the only person who knows where everything is.
If Inspiration does extend the human lifespan Annabelle really did die young. Speaking of extended lifespan, shouldn't someone have realized how old Whitley Styles and Max Mercer were and thought that they were looking rather chipper for humans their age?
How extensive is the cover-up anyway? The general public doesn't have a clue that the Inspiration Age happened, but what about the people who work for Æon?
I had the mental image of Whitley standing outside of an apartment building that was built on the spot where Annabelle died and realizing that only four people in the whole world had any idea of what happened there and what came of it. That wouldn't necessarily be accurate if other people had access to knowledge of the Inspiration age.
