[Aberrant] Pope Benedict XVI promulgates Ad Dei Lucem (Toward the Light of God), an encyclical ("papal bull") declaring that novas, like baselines, have immortal souls, are tainted with original sin and can be saved through the grace of Christ.

It bears mentioning, again, that the TU's Benedict isn't Cardinal Palpatine Ratzinger, but Mario Bardi. It's also worth mentioning that he came to his epiphany after a conversation with Alejandra.

Opus Dei were not happy. Its prelate-general, Dionigi Tettamanzi (who in OTL is only an Opus Dei sympathizer and the Archbishop of Milan), was doubly unhappy with papal liaison Roderigo Alta for the encyclical (which contravened Opus Dei's position that tolerance for novas was suffering diviners and "such as have familiar spirits") and for letting His Holiness meet with an aberrant in the first place. Alta was ordered to wear his cilice full-time (which led to his death from a heart attack induced by poisoning the thigh-chain).
