Celebrating a birthday

While I work on reassembling a present for [livejournal.com profile] etherlad, here's another piece of it. This one's a combination birthday card/biographical horror story.

On this date in 1983, Meena Harjapatan was born in Mumbai, India (which we in the West know better as Bombai). As her surname might imply, her parents were (and thus she too was) of the Harijan caste, also known as Dalits, known in English as "untouchables".
Perhaps it is this below-the-law status that, sometime this year, makes her look like an evening's fun to three handsome Bollywood stars. (Even in our world, Mumbai is the center of India's movie industry; in the Aberrant Era, its product is rapidly displacing that of Hollywood.)
With the second of them on top of her and the pavement under her, something snaps inside her head. In the groove between her brain's hemispheres, the peculiar cells known as farahcytes begin to accrete, rapidly forming a Mazarin-Rashoud node. She feels a dark energy flooding her body, and she sends it into her assailants. They scream and beg and ultimately die from the reshaping of their bodies and concomitant rupture of their organs.
The problem of taint — the side-effect of novas' affinity for quantum energies — is just starting to come to most people's attention. The masses were distantly aware of the physical changes that sometimes accompany eruption — for instance, Montoya Bernal's eruption turned his skin green and caused him to sprout fins on his wrists and ankles. But for the first few years of the Nova Age, relatively few novas attained levels of power that would cause them to develop further aberrations.
Some of those few were vid stars, who found Mumbai a natural habitat. Others wanted to become stars, but didn't think a mass audience would warm to glowing eyes or extra arms (at least, not in the arena where they wanted to succeed). Meena's "Purity Clinic" is the answer to their dreams. She can temporarily alleviate the aberrations caused by taint.
Or she can exacerbate them. Or transfer them to those who think her way of doing business tastes like blackmail or the modus operandi of a Megasyndicate drug-pusher. On the streets, they call her "the Sin-Eater". Those who piss her off learn the hard way that she can spit those sins back out.
