aberrantangels: (welcome to hell)
Ironically, I have an appointment with my own therapist this afternoon.

June 11
[Aberrant] Carmel "Calamity" Callahan is interviewed by Dr. Wilhelmina Helene Rausch-Rivers, of the Craiglockhart Centre for the Treatment of War Disorders, about the Field of Glass incident.

Aberrant: Elites dates this as happening on June 11, 2007, despite it referring to events later in that same year, but this is obviously the earliest June 11 on which the discussion can take place. Ah, White Wolf, where editors are something that happens to other companies.

Dr. Rausch-Rivers: I know, Carmel, and we have touched on this before. But I think we should put off that discussion till a later time. Right now, I feel as if you're trying to stall about something.

She actually says this to him after he's discoursed on how he prayed the night before the attack: "I remember asking [the Virgin] Mary for her special help.... Mary has helped me a lot since I was a kid." But she could just as easily be saying it to me, because there's a certain amount of stalling in the writing of this post. The level of emotional intensity that comes off the page, when he's telling her about the Field of Glass, literally hurts me to read. Or maybe it's just the sense of him letting out a scream that nobody really hears.

Before we get to that point, he talks about how pumped up he was for the attack, the fight with Totentanz he was expecting. This leads Rausch-Rivers to ask if the US government had given him soma, and Callahan to at least the second in a series of denials.

Eventually, he talks about what happened when his Calamity Blast melted the fort, slagged the stone and fused the sandbags into glass:

I didn't shoot right *at* them, but they were too close by... ) I killed 143 dumb, unwilling kids! I will never use my powers again. Oh, God, I will never be forgiven...

Rausch-Rivers asks her assistant, Joey, to send for Marie and Selima, while Callahan raves some more:

I swear the Lord hates us all or is testing us and trying to destroy us. I don't understand how anybody could be like me, and kill people like me, and not go crazy.... You know what? I think Totentanz is more than an icon. I think anyone who kills that easily really is Death. I bet he doesn't get nightmares. Oh, God, I'm not human any more.

He warns Rausch-Rivers that everybody needs to be careful of people like him and asks her to tell everyone. She assures him that she will and asks him, in return, to let Marie give him his tranquilizer. He agrees, then says they're not strong enough and asks if he could have the green pills instead. Then he asks somebody to pull the blinds down on the office window, as the sun is going down and "I can see my own face behind you." Rausch-Rivers asks Marie to tend to the blinds, but she's not quite quick enough: "Oh, my God! Please, please, get me out of here, help me, my eyes are watching me in the glass!" (Recording breaks off)

An even more tenuous common thread.

January 20
[Aberrant] The German Ministry of Transport, Construction and Housing announces plans to link the nation's major cities with high-speed maglev trains.

In OTL, they're talking about one maglev service, from Munich to Franz Josef Strauss International. (Maybe in the TU, they'll reactivate the Hamburg and Berlin maglines.)

[Aberrant] Anna DeVries sends a letter to Linda "Lotus Infinite" Raphael attempting to persuade her in favor of accepting a full-time DeVries contract, offering as an inducement the care of DeVries' paraphysician if Raphael's current aberrations worsen.

Lotus' most obvious current aberration is that her hair constantly swirls as if in a gentle imaginary wind; she's taken to shaving her head to hide that.

War is hell.

November
[Aberrant] After initial testing and rehabilitation at the Craiglockhart Centre for the Treatment of War Disorders, Carmel "Calamity" Callahan is admitted as a full-time patient for an indefinite period or until his rehabilitation, whichever happens first.

This successor to Craiglockhart War Hospital isn't located in the original building, which is presumably being put to the same use in the TU as in OTL, but on the island of New Guinea, discreetly out of the public eye. The British government established it in 2005, when it became clear that nova PTSD raised a new set of issues.

Fan me, Calamity. )

No preliminary text; I am le tired.

May 1
[Aberrant] Frank Reneau, head of security for Hudson Timber, sends an OpMail to CEO John Hudson discussing the package Mr. Penin of DeVries National Tactical Solutions has offered as protection for HT's northwestern timberlands.

DVNTS was offering the same package used in the Nigerian oil fields: a nova or two, three helicopters, a pack of hounds, baseline infantry, and fully staffed garrisons throughout the territory. Reneau admits that "[t]hat seems a little excessive for Canada," but doesn't consider that they can sit on their hands in light of the recent eco-terrorist activities on their turf. At the very least, he recommends some cameras with satellite access.

[Adventure!] Whitley Styles records in his journals that, as far as he can tell, Maxwell Anderson Mercer vanished into thin air last July. Michael Donighal has cabled him from the Far East, reporting no success and recommending Whit not waste any more of his time.

As we've seen, he found his friend again.

1924
[Adventure!] Whitley Styles records in his journal that Max's idea of the Æon founders spending Christmas together "was perfect. It was like a second family....I even saw Jack crack a smile or three."

Aww...

2001
[Aberrant] Lambert Asani, son of Congo diamond magnate Mente Asani, and his three brothers travel the world meeting with novas who could help Lambert's goal of deposing Congo president Laurent Kabila.

Asani doesn't rate a mention in the Aberrant core rules; he's entirely from Aberrant: Elites.

2002
[Aberrant] Over the next three years, much of the world's copper and fiber-optic cable communications networks are replaced with advanced optic cable, derived from studies of eufiber, and wireless networking. The new hardware, couple with new data-transfer protocols, is dubbed "OpNet." OpNet replaces the Internet, phone systems and cellular networks, allowing for wireless communications from virtually any location. It boasts an initial 700% increase in data speed over previous telecommunications technology.

The expansion of the OpNet is mostly complete by May of this year.

Caestus Pax announces that Team Tomorrow will be splitting into T2M Americas and T2M Europe. Pax himself, along with Lightning, Apollo Kid, Slag, Splash, Uta "Tremor" Stentz and Byron "Saxon" Graham (among others), will be forming T2MEu, based out of Venice, while Montoya-Bernal, Psyche, Jennifer "Slider" Landers, Ana Graça Texeira and Pualani "Pele" Kapunani will comprise the Mexico City-based T2MAm. Ragnarockette and Shadow Artist will remain members-in-training.

You'll be seeing more of those names in times to come.

Project Utopia launches Novation Toys, Games and Comics, its licensing division, to compete with (among other things) the DeVries Agency's entry into the action-figure market. Series I action figures include Slag and the Fireman. The first wave of Novation-produced OpCast series includes Team Tomorrow: Protectors and Slag: Hot Metal Fury.

That last one's a little redundant, but it's in the calendar as written. I may merge it with the other datapoint, actually.

And once again, I almost run out of month.

1922
[Adventure!] Whitley Styles records in his journal that Michael Donighal has called, asking if Whit has had any better luck finding Max Mercer (whom neither of them has seen since the Hammersmith Incident). Whit resolves to catch the next boat to London: "Mrs. Austin will be disappointed, but her jewels can wait."

I've already spoiled the ending of this movie.

1923
[Adventure!] Whitley Styles records in his journal that Max Mercer has returned from Macao, conveniently at a time when the other six Æon founders were in Chicago, and almost the first words out of his mouth were "We're not the police, but we've got to do something with the people we stop." Jake Stefokowski wondered why these Inspired malefactors can't just be turned over to the police; Whit pointed out that most jurisdictions don't actually have laws against building "death rays". Professor Dixon suggested setting up a psychiatric facility; Jack Tallon offered some of his secluded African/Arabian holdings to the purpose. In the end, Mercer agreed to the project: "it's not enough to understand the wonders of our world; we must understand the people who experience them." Max has also suggested that the Æon core membership spend Christmas together.

It may be that this decision led directly to Bahrain. At the very least, it provided precedent.

2001
[Aberrant] The DeVries Agency announces the formation of a new arm, DeVries National Tactical Solutions. While the Agency does not apologize for its role in the Equatorial Wars, it transfers the management of its combat Elites™ to DVNTS.

I'm afraid I don't have much to add to that.

2002
[Aberrant] In the wake of Utopia's being granted oversight of Kashmir, Covert Action News reports on "Utopia's Real Agenda Revisited". The monitoring facilities in Kashmir would allow Utopia to watch India and China — the two largest armies, and largest official nova military forces, on the planet — and the southern parts of the RusCon. The article's author even speculates that Utopia may have manipulated China into taking an interest in Kashmir (which they never had before).

The original article on "Utopia's Real Agenda" appeared in April, but I don't seem to have written an entry about it at the time. *^^* It was to do with the negotiations that led to the London Peace Accord.

Jeez, I'm running out of month, aren't I?

1923
[Adventure!] In his journals, Whitley Styles records his amazement at some of the situations he and Æon's other founders have survived in the past four months. Mercer has had to remind them not to take it personally. "After all, the Æon Society is not a secret government and has no intention of becoming one. We fight against secrets." At the same time, Whit's not so sure about Max's insistence on Æon's files being open to anyone who walks in — general knowledge of some Inspired activities could start a panic, after all — but in general, "I think people should know what's going on.... It'd be easy to forget we're doing good things if we hid from the public eye."

How right he was.

1999
[Aberrant] Lambert Asani erupts during a brutal fistfight with his father, Congolese diamond magnate Mente Asani, over whether the family is better off under Laurent Kabila's rule than they were when the Congo was a European colony.

When the fight is over, the elder Asani is in a coma, and the younger has decided to go into the country-running business for himself.

2001
[Aberrant] Newsweek reports on the "End of the Five Families" of the New York Mafia, all of whom (from the capo di tutti capi down to the lowest button man) were busted by a Team Tomorrow/FBI/NYPD task force.

Yadda yadda.
aberrantangels: (Trinity Universe)
Sorry this didn't get up yesterday, but I couldn't think of much to add to it.

2002
[Aberrant] Dr. Andrew Weisman, a DeVries paraphysician, sends Anna DeVries a memo on "centipede syndrome" — the temporary drop in ability the recently erupted face when they start to think about their powers and, like the centipede in the fable poem, are unsure how to gain conscious control of their gifts.

The poem is called “The Perils of Thinking”, according to some of the webpages I found it on. This is the way I learned it:

A centipede was happy quite
Until a frog in fun
Said “Pray, which leg comes after which?”
This raised her mind to such a pitch
She lay distracted in the ditch,
Considering how to run.

If the story pre-existed the poem, I’ve not been able to nail down how. It’s apparently one of those memes that’ve seeped into the general ideasphere. DeVries, and Utopia, and the Teragen, and a lot of the other organizations that seek out novas, train them to get past the centipede’s dilemma (as it’s also called) so they can expand their powers beyond what they start with.

I've finally decided to make "This month in Trinity Universe history" a separate category from "This day [etc]".

Abandoning the search, but not the hope. )

Playing catch-up again. (I sometimes think I should've just backdated the whole journal to 1998.) This is the last event until March that isn't part of future tension.
